IS PSO still online?

It might be a dumb question to ask but is the original PSO servers still up? I was wondering because of how many people talk about it here. I was thinking about buying it but I'd rather not just be able to stare at the main menu and nothing else

Sadly, the original servers for Phantasy Star Online were shut down almost 20 years ago. Luckily fan servers have been online since the original shutdown! You can still find quite a few players on Version 2, but no one plays version 1. Also, there's offline play if the fan servers ever go down.

I know for a fact that PSO still is supported by a private server for the Gamecube release which is kinda kick ass not gonna lie

Dreamcast release has a command that can allow you to join gamecube teams but it has a high probability to crash the game (syrlevant server)
