should i prune some of the topics not needed like the retro sega stuff? with the quakeworld boards, and the doom boards which will be added, the site increasingly looks like shit on pc. i could also remove/merge the dreampipe/dreamcast topics

what do you guys think?

What I would recommend is to minimize the number of topics down to the bare minimum required to keep things sensible.

When you have a ton of frequently added content, you want to have a lot of topics to divide up the content to keep it manageable for readers. In the corollary, when you have very little content, you don't want to have many topics or else the content will look even more sparse.

I would merge all of the Dreampipe topics into one Dreampipe topic, take the General, Online, Modding & Hacking, and Troubleshooting Dreamcast topics and make them into one General Dreamcast topic, keep the individual online games' individual topics, merge the Saturn topics into one topic, and drop all of the other SEGA consoles' topics.

And personally, while I appreciate the "festiveness" of the background graphics on the forum's pages, the patterns can make some of the text difficult to read. I'd prefer a plain-colored background instead to help with that - and it would help to reduce the loading times on dial-up connections.
